Environmental Educator 2

Under the general direction of the New York City Regional Director or designee, the Environmental Educator 2 manages region-wide environmental programs by performing the following duties:
o Directs programs, maintenance and administration, including support activities and staff; o Develops, conducts, publicizes, and evaluates environmental education courses and interpretive programs, including:
o Preparing lesson plans for a wide range of ages and groups; o Developing teaching aids and exhibits; o Evaluating current programs, teaching and publicity materials, exhibits, and collections; o Determining the need for revisions and modifications; and o Supervising the implementation of new and revised programs and materials. o Develops, prepares, and revises non-teaching environmental education programs, materials, audiovisual programs, and exhibits by:
o Conducting research; o Developing themes and exhibits; o Preparing and writing informational materials and illustrations for publication; and o Maintaining and modifying exhibits, publications, audiovisual programs, and other material with regional approval. o Plans and conducts workshops for teachers and staff about environmental education programs and concepts; o Acquires, catalogs, and maintains specimens and other teaching materials for programs; o Plans and conducts special events and courses in support of environmental programs, including:
o Recruiting volunteers; o Planning, organizing, and publicizing events; o Contracting for equipment, performers, and presenters; and o Purchasing and preparing materials. o Supervises and evaluates program staff; o Researches and surveys natural and environmental history and concerns; o Manages and administers collections and exhibits; o Works with representatives from schools, colleges, organizations, and the public to promote the facilities and programs; o Requests and allocates resources for program implementation; o Develops alternate sources of funding for programs; and o Performs a variety of administrative activities to support programs. The incumbent will supervise various seasonal and permanent staff assigned to the Environmental Education Team region-wide; will work closely with other park personnel, volunteers, and vendors; and will be required to work at other State Parks within the NYC region as needed to assure NYS Parks' mission is always met.

Salary Range:
From $61270 to $77912 Annually
Minimum Qualification
For Permanent Transfer Appointment:
One year of permanent state service as an Environmental Educator 2. For Provisional Appointment:
Either 1. one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Environmental Educator 1. Or 2. Four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional/technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education AND two years of experience teaching or interpreting the natural world AND two years additional experience in environmental education as defined below. Or 3. Two years of the experience described above AND 60 college semester credit hours, including at least 24 college semester credit hours in biology (for the purpose of this position, courses that focus on the study of domesticated or farm animals or humans are not qualifying), earth science, ecology, environmental education, environmental science, field natural history, forestry, geology, marine science, natural resources interpretation, or soil science. AND two years additional experience in environmental education as defined below . You MUST submit a list of qualifying courses with your application, including course title, number of semester credits per course, name of college or university, and the date (or expected date) of completion. A Bachelor's degree in the biological sciences, environmental education, environmental science, or natural resources interpretation AND two years additional experience in environmental education as defined below . Experience:
Environmental education is defined as teaching about or interpreting the natural world, the principles of ecology, natural resources management, and environmental quality management. It deals with the interrelationships of plants, animals, and the non-living environment and emphasizes human interactions with these components. Examples of Acceptable
Experience:
Experience as a naturalist at a nature setting; an instructor in an environmental education program; or as a designer of environmental education programs for youth organizations such as scouting groups, 4 H clubs, YMCA, etc. Examples of Non-qualifying
Experience:
Experience as a teacher of courses such as chemistry, physics, and biology; as a youth leader who carries out pre-established programs; or as a leader of outings for a conservation organization, etc. Provisional employees must take and pass the next Civil Service Examination for Environmental Educator 2, G-18, and be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for permanent appointment.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
