Lead Inpatient Pharmacy Technician

Responsibilities include administrative activities such as, workload analysis, scheduling, staff training and organization of day to day operations in the inpatient pharmacy. This technician is also responsible for in depth knowledge of inpatient pharmacy policies and procedures for filling and dispensing of medications; ward stock replenishment, cart fill processes, crash cart replenishment, re-packing of items for unit dose dispensing and overall ability to cover each area of the inpatient technician staff. This person may function in various areas of the pharmacy, cover outpatient pharmacy areas as needed and serves as a back-up for the controlled substance technician and the procurement specialist. As required and assigned, the lead technician is expected to accomplish all duties normally performed by general pharmacy technicians (GS-6 and lower) related to stocking, delivering, inventory, inspections, assembling ward orders, prescription set ups, controlled substances distribution, IV and hazardous drug compounding, and unit-dose drug packaging, dispensing, and distribution. Lead technician will work closely with the lead outpatient pharmacy technician and inpatient pharmacy supervisor in order to coordinate activities. Other duties include:
Develop the work schedule and rotate duties of the outpatient technicians. Plan, assess and make recommendations with regards to leave. Assess workload volume throughout the day, identify backlogs, and make staffing adjustments as needed to meet organizational goals. With coordination of the supervisor pharmacist assigns daily tasks for pharmacy technicians and reviews their work through spot checks, audits and observations for appropriateness, timeliness and accuracy. Coordinate day-to-day maintenance and operation of outpatient pharmacy area equipment and automation. Responsible for assisting outpatient pharmacy supervisor in ensuring all employees meet performance standards and competencies. Identify areas for improvement as needed, and provide input into technician performance appraisal reviews. Assist the supervisory pharmacists in interviewing and selecting new employees and candidates for promotion and/or reassignment. Make recommendations of employees for performance awards and other forms of recognition. Assist Inpatient pharmacy supervisor in coordinating and conducting all inpatient narcotic vault activities. Utilizes an excellent working knowledge of all US Pharmacopoeia, TJC, and VA manual storage requirements to determine well-defined drug and supply storage locations with a special emphasis on security and special storage instructions. Designs/develops floor plans for stock location changes to maximize drug storage space. Ensures that all drug and supply storage conforms to VA and OSHA standards. Perform related duties such as rotating stock when new orders arrive to minimize waste due to expiration and assisting in maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the Pharmacy. Ensures staff are properly trained and supervised to complete these functions. Conduct technician meetings to assure proper updates of departmental and hospital communications. Assist in the development and revision of policies and procedures, and participate in departmental goal planning and quality improvement activities. Monitors and analyzes orders and distribution patterns to identify questionable circumstances or unusual trends (such as waste, fraud, diversion or abuse). Communicates potential problems to supervisor or Pharmacy Chief. Preparing and filling all orders and requests for controlled substances. Ensures all necessary information is on prescription. Ensure that incoming stock orders are checked for accuracy, that quantity received corresponds to quantity ordered, and that incoming orders are immediately signed for. Assist pharmacists in determining high priority or emergency requirements and initiates procurement activity to local wholesale sources. Develops and/or executes of procedures to procure special order products available only through manufacturer-created specialty programs. Conduct technician meetings to assure proper updates of departmental and hospital communications. Assist in the development and revision of policies and procedures, and participate in departmental goal planning and quality improvement activities. Encourage pharmacy technicians to report actual and/or potential medication errors or adverse events, and participate in quality improvement initiatives to promote patient safety. Perform any duties of a pharmacy technician when the needs of the service require. Perform timekeeper duties as assigned, with the exception of approving or denying leave, this function is reserved for supervisors only. Experience:
A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. Certification:
Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) isrequired at grades GS-6 and above. Grade Determinations:

Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. 5. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process. 6. Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures. 7. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. 8. It may be necessary to transport moderate to heavy case items (20-60 pounds) to wards, around the medical center, and pharmacy areas to replenish stock. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster.
