Major duties and responsibilities will include but not limited to:
Protect the civil rights of all individuals on VA controlled property; Prevent, detect and investigate crimes; Patrol assigned areas on foot or by motor vehicle; Subdue persons causing disturbance or who threaten harm to themselves or others; Follow rules/procedures concerning search and seizure of evidence and contraband; Obtain search and arrest warrants; Arrest violators; Prepare report of activities and events that occurred during shift; Perform traffic control; and Assist citizens in emergency situations. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Work Schedule:

Experience as a Security Guard or Corrections Officer is generally NOT qualifying. LAUTENBERG AMENDEMENT:
This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 922(g)(91)). Candidates who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not qualified for this position. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense. New VA Police Officers are required to attend and successfully pass an 10-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas within 90 days of entry on duty. 4. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government. 5. A medical examination is required. The incumbent must undergo and pass an annual physical for Police Officers in accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 0730. Since the duties of this position are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying circumstances, the incumbent must posses emotional and mental stability. He/she is confronted daily with physical demands, such as responding to emergency situations (i.e., fires, disturbances, alarm activation). This includes moderate to arduous physical exertion; the ability to run, climb multiple stairs, lifting disabled or injured individuals, crawling, crouching and standing for long periods of time. The incumbent, on a reoccurring basis, is required to use his/her physical ability to restrain violent person(s) using unarmed defensive tactics.
Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
